Halloween on the Dark Side

This year the kids went evil with the Vampire Princess and Darth Vader costumes. I just couldn't bring myself to buying them off the rack (except for his mask) so we got pretty crafty with the fabrics, thrift store trinkets and lots of spray paint.

Spooky Snacks

Cute, edible, and healthier then the other Halloween crap. You're welcome.

Glowing Eyeballs

Here's a way to freak out your neighbors while creating a fun afternoon craft for the kids. Simply cut styrofoam balls in half, paint with glow-in-the-dark paint, then dot the pupils with black. You can stick them anywhere although I found the eyes peering from the bushes the spookiest at night.

Pretty Little Placemats

I couldn't resist this amazingly bold graphic print at Bolt Fabrics this weekend. Whipped them into placemats the same day!

Tee-Pee Time

We talked about making a tee-pee for the backyard and it wasn't until my husband threatened to buy on on Etsy that launched me into a craft frenzy. I found a great tutorial online that uses canvas tarps, wooden dowels and black fabric paint. I was able to complete the project in 1 weekend - painting included!

April Fools!

Kids at this age are the best - so easily fooled and excited by most anything. This year for April Fool's Day, I found a few great ideas online. First up, the faux "grilled cheese" sandwich made of toasted pound cake (get the bread loaf shape) and orange frosting. I don't recommend the pre-mixed orange frosting. I started with white and added food coloring until it was just the perfect hue of cheddar.

Finally, I put their milk in the freezer before leaving for work that day. Too funny!

Roaring 20's Style

For our kid's school auction this year, the theme was Roaring 20's. Luckily I've been binge-watching Downton Abbey so I got some great ideas for my dress. I love the deco pattern on the sequin panel and the tassel necklace was the perfect accessory. Not to mention my handsome date!

Little Black Dress

It's Christmas party season again and I'm always scrambling to find the right dress. This year I was inspired by a simple design I found online and challenged myself to create my own version. The final result was exactly what I wanted and it fit like a glove.

Be a Hero this Halloween

Now that my daughter is 7, she has strong opinions about what her costume should be. When she chose  Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz, I agreed even if it wasn't a big costume challenge for me. Seeing the delight on her face when she put on the dress and ruby slippers made it all worthwhile.

My son, on the other hand, is only 5 and easily persuaded to wear obscure costumes. He's really been into wrestling and super heroes, so my husband had the genius idea of making him Nacho Libre this year. Tights + muscles + mask + cape was a winning combination. He fell for it.
